Robert Brown calls for new international image for Scotland

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 15th Oct 2004

Glasgow Liberal Democrat MSP Robert Brown has called for the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish Executive to take full advantage of the opportunities for building international links which, he says, can help business and tourism. Robert has welcomed the Scottish Executive's new International Strategy

Robert Brown said:

"The opening of the Parliament's new building and the arrival of a number of foreign dignitaries and visitors is a superb showcase for Scotland. 750,000 visitors a year are expected to visit the Parliament, coming from both home and abroad.

It is vital that we examine the relationship Scotland has with other countries and the way in which Scotland is perceived by them.

The new International Strategy is important in doing this; it involves promoting Scotland as a leading nation, attractive to overseas business and visitors. It means perusing Scottish interests internationally and maximising the benefits to the people of Scotland through our international work.

As part of the strategy it is important that Scotland is seen as an attractive place for people to visit, live, work, study and do business in. Our international image must reflect the wealth of opportunities available in Scotland, encourage investment and growth and reflect the diversity of our culture.

Scotland's image cannot be changed overnight by a slick public relations campaign; the substance underlying the image is what is important. Our image is built on what people learn about us and depends on people meeting us as tourists, students, football supporters and business people.

Therefore, Scotland's people must take pride in their country, we must emphasise the powerful images and beautiful scenery of Scotland and make the most of our unique exports, including Irn Bru! Scotland has a new place in the world and must generate a fresh and dynamic image to reflect this."

Robert Brown made his comments after speaking in a debate in the Scottish Parliament on the issue.
