Robert Brown calls for more Big Lottery Funding for Rutherglen and Cambuslang
12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 1st Jun 2007
Glasgow Liberal Democrat MSP Robert Brown today welcomed the news that the Big Lottery fund has allocated a massive £257 million to Scotland for the next two years.
However, in welcoming the news, he also expressed concern that in the last round of Lottery funding, organisations based in Rutherglen and Cambuslang had not done very well. Mr. Brown has written to the Chief Executive of the Big Lottery Fund to ask for some background on the reasons for this apparent anomaly.
Recently Cathkin High School and Toryglen Community hall benefited from the funds, developing the Big Lottery Fund Reaching for Success initiative and the Toryglen Arts Programme respectively.
Mr. Brown hopes that these local successes will encourage other community groups to apply for support from the Fund, which has been allocated to investing in communities, and for young people.
Applications can be for many types of project such as: developing assets like land, buildings or physical equipment, or to support people at times of change in their lives.
Robert Brown said:
"The release of £257 million for investment in communities in Scotland can only be a good thing for Rutherglen and Cambuslang.
"Last time, the Big Lottery gave just under £7 million to the Glasgow area for developing communities, but unfortunately groups based in Rutherglen and Cambuslang only received £12,000 of this, although it is fair to say that the area also benefited from awards to groups based in other parts of South Lanarkshire. For example, groups based in Hamilton and the surrounding areas received over £400,000. I am keen to see more applications from Rutherglen and Cambuslang this time round. Local groups can find out more by logging onto www.biglotteryfund.org.uk"
