Robert Brown calls for more support for deaf and hard of hearing people

3.40.40pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 29th Jun 2007

A call for more support and information for people who are deaf or hard of hearing has come from Glasgow Liberal Democrat MSP Robert Brown. Mr. Brown has lodged a motion for Parliament in support of RNID Scotland "Here to be heard" report.

RNID Scotland is the national charity representing the 758,000 deaf and hard of hearing people across the country.

Commending the report - which found that three quarters of hearing aid users felt that instruction on how to maintain their aids would have been useful before fitting - he called for more support for new hearing aid users, and a full NHS Scotland evaluation into how the needs of hearing aid users can best be met.

The research for the report discovered that only half of those surveyed believed they received enough instruction on how to use their aids before fitting. The report was carried out in with the RNID in conjunction with Glasgow Caledonian University.

Robert Brown said:

"Around 1 in 3 people over 60 are deaf or hard of hearing and a hearing aid can make a real difference in helping to overcome the effects of hearing loss. But the hearing aid needs to be suitable and people need full and effective instruction in how to use them.

"If people are not persevering with their hearing aids, then something is going wrong. I'd like NHS Scotland to review the support given to new hearing aid users, so we can see what we can do to help empower hearing aid users and make sure they get full benefit from their devices. Few things are worse than being unnecessarily cut off from the world by hearing problems."
