Robert Brown demands action on alcohol abuse

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 12th Jul 2007

A call has been made for a sustained attack on the alcohol culture in Scotland. Responding to Scottish Executive figures showing that alcohol-related liver disease is on the rise, Glasgow Liberal Democrat MSP Robert Brown, has urged the Scottish Government to take action to prompt a long term culture change on alcohol habits in Scotland.

Alcoholic Liver Disease almost doubled in Glasgow between 1996 and last year - from 640 to 1,201.

Robert Brown said:

"These statistics are deeply concerning, but they are a trend which is all too familiar. The lives of many local families are ruined by excess drinking.

"The Scottish Executive must clarify urgently what action it will take to tackle alcohol abuse.

"I want to see the action to tackle inappropriate drinks promotions, such as alcohol being sold cheaper than bottled water, by off-sales premises. It is also urgently necessary to target and reduce under age drinking.

"Alcohol abuse is a serious problem that cannot be swept under the carpet."
