Robert Brown backs MacMillan Cancer Support12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 27th Jul 2007
The first visitor through the door of the Mobile Macmillan Cancer Information Centre on its visit to Glasgow this week was Glasgow Liberal Democrat MSP Robert Brown. During the visit, Mr. Brown learned about the service and afterwards gave his backing to the project. Robert Brown said: "Macmillan are of course well known for their palliative care for cancer sufferers, but I was impressed by the extent of their work in giving advice, support and information to people about cancer. "They also run a cancer telephone helpline, a youth cancer line and an Asian language cancer helpline. The mobile bus had over 6,500 visitors in its tour last year - and its now been going for 7 years. "Many more people now survive cancer and the new treatments available have meant much better survival rates and a better quality of life for many people. "However, the strongest message I picked up was the advantage of getting advice early. People are worried about bothering their doctor and feel they are wasting valuable time by asking questions. However, if people are worried about their health and have worrying symptoms, it is far better to err on the safe side and get proper advice early. "The Macmillan people can give guidance on what to do. Their helpline can be contacted by calling free on 0800 808 2020" The Macmillan purpose-adapted Information Bus was in Argyll Street as part of its 9 month UK tour, providing advice, information and support to people worried about cancer problems or looking for advice about lifestyles, prevention and treatment.
