Robert Brown calls for support for outdoor learning

12.00.00am GMT Thu 7th Feb 2008

Glasgow Liberal Democrat MSP Robert Brown has made a call for better Government backing for outdoor learning for young people.

Mr. Brown made the call for improved support through increased funding, the protection of green spaces, and a commitment to tackle the barriers to outdoor learning, during a debate in the Scottish Parliament.

Mr. Brown also congratulated the work of the Scout Association, the Scottish Youth Hostelling Association, the Scottish Centres, and the Scottish Environmental and Outdoor Education Centres Association in providing high quality facilities and resources and expertise to reassure parents and guarantee high standards in outdoor play and activity.

Calling for the Government to support the building, preservation, and organisation of outdoor education facilities, Mr. Brown said that Scotland must fully use the resources already available to us and ensure that we know where all the facilities available exist.

Robert Brown said:

"Outdoor activities are often overlooked in today's risk-averse society. All young people should have the opportunity to access outdoor play facilities, regardless of where they live in Scotland.

"Connection to the world around, having a sense of place and having opportunities to explore, develop and learn are central to widening the life choices of many young people.

"Fifty percent of children who start school cannot communicate properly. The opportunities of outdoor education and other extra curricular activities can make an incredible contribution to overcome a restricted start in life.

"Our young people must be supported by a Government commitment to recognise and support the importance of first class facilities, and the organisations that provide the expertise to run them.

"The Government should also be tackling the barriers to outdoor learning, whether the barrier is the cost of the course, the need for expertise or the lack of green space or public parks for children to play.

"Young people are our future and extracurricular activities give huge opportunities for personal development, to build leadership qualities and resilience, to widen horizons and learn new skills and taste new interests.

"We should take the lead from Scandinavian countries where the idea of being outdoors in all weathers is natural and beneficial, and is widespread and successful.

"Organising proper play facilities to help children make friends and develop new skills is one of the basic things this Government should do to provide young people with the best possible start in life."
