Glasgow Liberal Democrat MSP Robert Brown has given his backing to the Winter Warmth campaign run by Energy Action Scotland

Energy Action Scotland seeks to eliminate fuel poverty in Scotland and the Winter Warmth Campaign is designed to raise awareness of the need for people to keep warm and to give advice about how to make best use of their heating arrangements.

The campaign encourages residents to be energy efficient, to check benefits or tax credit entitlements that free up extra money to be used for winter energy bills, and to shop for the best energy deal where possible.

Robert Brown said,

"This has already been a pretty cold winter. Too often we hear of individuals, particularly older people who have suffered ill health or even died because of inadequate heating in winter. The advice offered through the Winter Warmth campaign is very useful in helping to avoid these problems, particularly for those who are more vulnerable."

"This year there are the extra problems of the economic recession and higher fuel costs. Many families and individuals find themselves in a position where they are unsure of how to meet their bills or balance their expenses. This is where the Winter Warmth campaign can reach its full potential and help a considerable number of people in getting the best out of things."

"The advice and information is also not only useful for those struck by fuel poverty, but for everyone who wants to help the planet by reducing energy wastage and wants to adopt more efficient and environmentally friendly methods of energy consumption."

"This winter, like most others, being safe comes from staying warm. I hope people will take the chance to contact the Energy Saving Scotland Advice Centre on 0800 512 012 or the Home Heat Helpline on 0800 33 66 99.

Notes:

Energy Action Scotland advises that energy efficiency can be an inexpensive way to save money by draught proofing your home or by using appliances in a more economical manner. For further advice, the Energy Saving Scotland advice Centre can be reached at 0800 512 012

Tax Credit entitlement increases net income allowing for better winter budgeting. For further information on this, residents are encouraged to contact their local Citizens Advice Bureau.

Better energy deals from a gas or electricity company can save money as well because of differences in tariffs or methods of bill payment. Social tariffs are also an option and more information can be sought by contacting the Home Heat Helpline at 0800 33 66 99.
