Glasgow Liberal Democrat MSP Robert Brown has today called on groups in Rutherglen and Cambuslang to take advantage of the new £60 million Town Centre Regeneration Fund to breathe life into the town centres and invigorate community involvement in the areas.

The fund has recently been made available to town centres across Scotland to bid for money for projects benefiting the community, provided applications can show they will provide economic, social and environmental improvement to the area.

The cash could be used for new community facilities, preservation, shop fronts for the main street, or renovation of existing property.

Robert Brown said:

"This money could generate great improvement in the centres of Rutherglen and Cambuslang. It would be wonderful if community groups and other organisations got together to think innovative ways to utilise and apply for it.

"Now more than ever, local communities need a boost, and investing in our main streets, shopping areas and community spaces is a great way to bring everyone together.

"This is particularly important when our shopping centres are suffering a double whammy from the economic recession and out of town competition.

"The main streets and town centres should be the lifeblood of any community.

"Our Community facilities could definitely benefit from extra investment and I'd welcome applications from any local group with any exciting ideas on how to improve the town centre areas."
