Robert Brown welcomes Salmond support for parents12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 7th May 2009
Glasgow Liberal Democrat MSP Robert Brown has welcomed an undertaking from First Minister Alex Salmond that the Scottish Government will meet with parents in the Wyndford and Cadder areas over the Glasgow Primary School closures. The undertaking was extracted from Mr. Salmond when questioned by Robert Brown at First Minister's Questions in the Scottish Parliament last Thursday. Mr. Brown is calling for the SNP Government to intervene and provide the cash to keep the schools open. Robert Brown said: "I am pleased that The First Minister has agreed to meet with the parents involved in the school closure campaign. "I hope this will provide an opportunity for him to meet with the Council too, and to identify a more positive way forward for the local parents and children in Wyndford and Cadder. Local people were very clear at the recent public meeting that they were fed up with the tit for tat between Labour and SNP politicians on the school closures controversy. "The situation is now grim following the Council's decision to close both Wyndford and St. Gregory's Primary Schools in Wyndford, and St. Agnes' Primary School in Cadder, and their refusal to accept the justice of the case made by the local communities. "I hope Mr. Salmond agrees to help the parents with their plight when he or one of his Ministers finally meets them. "The Scottish Government must ensure that a funding stream is found to keep these vital schools open and to support the local communities affected." ends
